When Drew and Emily envisioned their engagement session, they wanted something that reflected their love for the outdoors and the natural beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day in Houghton after a winter of no snow. Fresh lake-effect snow had blanketed the towering pines in Houghton, turning the forest into a magical, snow-covered wonderland. It was the setting that felt straight out of a winter fairytale.
This winter had been an anomaly for the U.P., with hardly any snow (almost unheard of around here!). But the day before Drew and Emily’s session, we were blessed with several inches of fluffy, fresh, lake-effect snow—a few inches to cover the pines like chocolate-dipped pretzels. A gentle breeze would occasionally knock snow off the branches, creating a beautiful flurry that added a dreamy, natural snowfall to some of the photos. ✨
Drew and Emily’s vibe was playful and intimate from the very start. They’re the kind of couple that makes you feel like an old friend within minutes of meeting them. Their kindness and warmth made it easy for us to click, and before long, we were laughing and capturing moments that felt effortlessly real. Emily even brought along a cozy blanket that we used for a few sweet, snuggly shots—one of my favorites is her looking directly into the camera, a stunning expression that was both radiant and completely natural.
Drew’s inquiry gave me a glimpse of their incredible journey, and I knew right away that their session (and later their wedding) would be something special.
Their love story started in Nashville, Tennessee, where Emily was finishing her degree at Trevecca Nazarene University and Drew was working as a security officer. Fate brought them together when Emily locked her keys in her car—and Drew was the one who answered the call. That simple encounter left a mark on Drew that he couldn’t shake.
Fast forward through long-distance video chats, phone calls, and long-distance dating—and Drew made a bold, life-changing decision. In August 2022, he packed up his life and moved 900 miles to Houghton to be with Emily.
“I had embarked on a true adventure, the kind that old tales and storybooks and movies only talk about. My story, just like many other epics, has it all: the risk, the fight, the romance, the beauty, the hardship, the tears, the laughs, the joys. And it is only just beginning.”
Their love grew stronger through the distance, and now they’re married! Their wedding on the shores of Lake Superior in Calumet, Michigan, was so beautiful (and a story for another time). But their love story is one of unwavering commitment, bravery, and following your heart—and I feel honored to have captured this part of their journey. ❤️
If you’re considering a winter engagement session in the Upper Peninsula, I’m here to tell you—it’s so worth it. But a little preparation goes a long way! Here are a few tips to make the most of your session:
Layering is key. Cozy, thick sweaters, flannels, and dress coats work beautifully in photos while keeping you warm. We can always take breaks to warm up in the car or bundle up between shots. And yes, sometimes a little pink on the nose adds to the charm!
Winter light is unpredictable, but both sunny and cloudy days offer something special. A bluebird day can create a stunning glow, while overcast skies give a softer, muted vibe that feels cozy and romantic. Each moment is unique—and that’s the beauty of it.
Winter sessions can be a bit more adventurous, but the payoff is incredible. The snow, the textures, and the stillness of a winter forest create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere that’s perfect for capturing timeless, meaningful photos.
I always tell my couples that no two sessions will ever be exactly the same. You choose a photographer based on their portfolio and style, but every moment when that art is created is different—and that’s what makes your photos yours. They capture a fleeting moment in time, a feeling that’s uniquely yours.
Winter is a huge part of life in the Upper Peninsula, and I love helping couples embrace that season to create something unforgettable. It might take a little “sisu,” but trust me, the results are always worth it. 💙
Drew and Emily, your love story is one for the books. From your epic journey to Houghton to how you light up around each other, capturing your engagement was an honor.
If you’re ready to embrace the magic of winter for your engagement photos, I’d love to help create something unforgettable for you. Let’s bundle up and make some magic! ✨
